Okeechobee Main Street has
just recently increased the size of our Local Program Area (LPA). The
original LPA was made up of businesses and professionals, as well as
the
Old Courthouse and Jailhouse which were included in our revitalization
plans.
The new LPA now includes City Hall, several businesses,
professional offices and additional historic buildings. The picture below provides a pictorial view of
the Local Program Area.
As our plan materializes, our design focus will be on enhancing
the LPA's appearance
with an emphasis on restoring its traditional
character, rehabbing and reusing existing
building stock. But
it will also address functional issues , such as land use and
transportation planning, image materials, logos, banners, signage
and displays.
All which are possible manifestations of
economic, vitality, quality of life and community
pride. The
following picture is of the old jailhouse that was constructed in
1919.

This building will be the first
preservation objective of Okeechobee Main Street.
Working in
conjunction with the Okeechobee Historical Society and the County,
Okeechobee Main Street will begin working together in obtaining
grants and using
fund raisers to assist in the restoration.
